Minutes Of Meeting
30th Dec 2007.
Start: 10.30am
Present: Filza, Hazima, Haslina, Sulaiha, Helmy, Ahmad, Firdaus.
1. Viability of continuing with the tuition scheme
- The notion of discontinuing the weekly tuition scheme was brought up by Firdaus
- Instead Pelita should move towards a more achievable agenda such as helping delinquents and the elderly
-Existing Students should be channeled to more established tuition centers such as mendaki and amp. With Pelita through fund-raising efforts subsidising 50% of tuition fees.
- Filza mentioned that the tuition scheme was an integral component in Pelita and discontinuing it will ultimately affect many groups of people. The availability of less than desired substitutes to the pelita tuition scheme also made discontinuing our weekly lessons less desirable.
- Consensus was for continuing with the tuition scheme. Hence we must increase our volunteer base and skill set to ensure a higher standard of tuiton giving.
2. Suggestions to improve tuition scheme/Alternative activities we can engage in
- Hazima alerted us to the growing number of delinquents within our vicinity. Some of our ex-pelita students have been seen loitering with kids much older than them until very late at night. She suggested that we do something about the growing group of young delinquents.
- Haslina suggested that we should engage the older pupils to help us run the scheme and/or be an active volunteer in Pelita.
- Helmy enquired about or previous efforts at recruiting mentors, targeting the tertiary grps, etc.Our endeavours in these areas were not successful, however we should not stop trying.
- To improve the tuition scheme, the general consensus was to conduct daily activities/outings to make the tuition scheme less boring and more dynamic. Sulaiha suggested that more outdoor activities be conducted which would improve our overall branding/appeal such that we can attract more volunteers.
- Some of the suggested actives are
+Rock-Climbing
+Art Competition
+Treasure hunt @ Whampoa
+Garage Sale/Jualan Amal
- With regards to attracting more volunteers, the suggestions are
+Convert delinquents to active volunteers

+Word of mouth to our peers
3. Feedback from tutors
- Tutors were asked to air their personal concerns regarding the tuition scheme
- Many cited lack of motivation stemming from poor student attendance
- Having more tutors would also be a motivating factor
-However, many agreed that the general cohesiveness between the tutors is good. And outings to Arab street and such were positive and highly encouraged
